Letter from the Chair

The Times and Star has this week given good coverage to the Chamber's views on parking. We are vigorous in this campaign in the belief that our town needs a parking regime that is fit for purpose.

Prosperity in Cockermouth means, in the age of the motorcar, access for all that does not send local people and visitors to other towns or shopping centres with free parking. The Letters page includes contributions on this theme.

All members are invited to a meeting of the Chamber of Trade to be held on Wednesday 13 April at the Kirkgate Centre, starting at 6pm. Tea, coffee and sandwiches will be available before the meeting. The main purpose of the meeting is to agree actions for increasing local trade. Chamber Chairman Brian Trengrove is keen to ensure that our efforts reflect members' priorities, so please make every effort to attend. The bar will be open from 7.45pm when one drink will be free.

Get involved in Gala Day

Traders in the town centre are urged to get involved in a summer Gala Day as part of Cockermouth Midsummer Festival.

The event is due to take place on Sunday 19 June – the first Sunday of Festival week.

It follows a very successful event last year which saw street entertainers, musicians, writers and crafty workshops on offer for residents and visitors. A number of retailers have already pledged to take part, but more are encouraged to join the fun – not only boosting Summer trade but also helping make the Festival a success.

What do you think about Sunday trading?

Cockermouth business people are being invited to give their views about the possibility of Sunday trading across the town.

Chamber members are asked to contribute to a consultation exercise – and the opinions of shop and hospitality business owners are sought, as well as those of other company owners.

Chamber Chairman Brian Trengove said: “Cockermouth, our delightful market town, has been described as a department store of individual shops. This mix of quality independent traders offers a really unique shopping experience.

The team carried out 75 rescues in 2010, another record year - but money is always needed to ensure this work can continue. Advertising in the annual report not only supports the Team’s work, but also benefits your own business as the publication is seen by thousands of people each year.
